Avalanche Skills Training

Avalanche Course Provider

It is important to me to show others how to travel safely in the mountains so I enjoy teaching Avalanche Skills Training (AST) courses based out of Banff, Canmore and Rogers Pass. Are you going to be heading into the backcountry this winter? You might consider signing up for a certified Avalanche Skills Training (AST) course:

Avalanche Skills Training (AST) 1
Take your safety into your own hands. This course is essential for anyone venturing into the backcountry. Avalanches claim the lives of many every year. Be prepared and learn the basics of avalanche safety. Skills covered included using avalanche transceivers, assessing snow packs, route finding, and more.
Day 1 will be in the classroom (Canmore), day 2 in the field (Icefields Parkway). Certificate will be issued at the end of the course.
Cost includes: 2 days of instruction and snow safety equipment. You will need to bring adequate clothing and equipment for a backcountry ski tour (or snowshoes).
Min 6, max 8 students.

Avalanche Skills Training (AST) 2
This course is designed for those who have previously taken the AST 1 course or for experienced backcountry skiers looking to expand their skills. It is a 4 day program featuring 3 days of extensive practical field experience and one day of classroom theory.
Cost includes: 4 days of instruction and snow safety equipment. You will need to bring adequate clothing and equipment for a backcountry ski tour.
Min 4, max 8 students.

Crevasse rescue training

Crevasse and Rope Rescue

Crevasse Rescue/Glacier Travel:
If you are planning on travelling on the glaciers, summer or winter, then you need to know how to rope-up and perform crevasse rescue. Unfortunately many people die in crevasses either because they don't know when to have the rope on or because their group is not proficient in crevasse rescue techniques.

I teach crevasse rescue courses year round. The course can be tailored to your needs -

  • 1-day for folks wanting to refresh/upgrade their skills.
  • 2-days for those who are new to glacier travel and rope rescue techniques.

Rope Rescue:

If you do a lot of multipitch rock or ice climbing then you might want to consider learning how to rescue your partner if something goes wrong. This 1-day course teaches you everything you need to know about getting you and your partner out of trouble - escaping the belay, raising, lowering, tandem rapelling.
